Let’s Visit Lake Mills!

Lake Mills in Jefferson County, Wisconsin, has much to offer residents and visitors.

In this week’s post, let’s visit Lake Mills, Wisconsin! 

“If you’re looking for one location offering a “lake life” atmosphere, entertainment, boutique shops, picturesque parks, a beautifully quaint Main Street with small-town charm, accessibility (conveniently located nearly halfway between Madison and Milwaukee), and growing industry…you’re here,” notes Legendary Lake Mills, the municipality’s blended organization made up of local business representatives and community members.

Lake Mills, Wisconsin is in Jefferson County on the east shore of Rock Lake.  According to Wikipedia,  the first settler, Captain Megan, named the region “Lake Mills” because of its near proximity to a saw mill and grist mill using power from Rock Lake.

The city was chartered in 1836, and the first building erected in 1837.  By 1852, the village of Lake Mills was incorporated from the surrounding town of Lake Mills.  In 1866, the locality’s name was changed to “Tyranena”(meaning “sparkling waters”) but reversed to Lake Mills the following year.

Today, Lake Mills has much to offer residents and visitors.  “Rock Lake is a crystal clear 1,371-acre recreational oasis,” says enjoyjeffersoncounty.com, “beckoning fun-seeking visitors and residents to its cool waters and tree-lined shores.” 

Five parks surround the water where people can enjoy fishing, canoeing, swimming, skiing, and other water sports.

Travel Wisconsin notes Lake Mills is also home to Aztalan State Park.  The park is one of the state’s most important archaeological sites, “showcasing an ancient Middle-Mississippian village that thrived between A.D. 1000 and 1300,” says the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. 

Other fun things in Lake Mills include a variety of festivals, a winery, a brewery, assorted shops, and historic architecture.
